What’s On – November

Horley’s Christmas Market

Untitled_15725447330_lOur fabulous candlelit Christmas Market is being held in St. Etheldreda’s Church on Saturday November 28th between 5 and 7pm. Thanks again to the Ladies Guild (and their little helpers) there are some lovely stalls booked, including home made produce, Christmas decorations,  mulled wine and mince pies and of course, Father Christmas and his Chief Elf will be in their grotto loaded down with presents.

Wonder if we will have Horley’s very own wandering minstrels to accompany us throughout the evening to help prepare for Christmas and get into the festival spirit???  See Pictures from last year

Horley Bell Ringers

poppy-appealOn Remembrance Sunday 8th November a full peal will be rung between 14.00 and 17.00.  The band are experts so it should be high quality ringing.

What’s a peal…..?

the bellsA peal is when more than 5000 ‘changes’ are rung continuously and usually lasts about two and three quarter hours.   A ‘change’ is when the order of the bells is changed, so for example instead of ringing bells 1-2-3-4-5-6 in turn (called rounds), the order might become 2-1-34-5-6.  This is one ‘change’).    On six bells as we have in Horley, 720 different changes are possible, so to achieve the necessary number of changes for a peal,  the 720 changes will be rung seven times, each time in a different way.   As you can imagine, this requires great concentration and skill as there are no rests, breaks or swapping over ringers during the peal.

Then there is a Horley practice on Friday 13th Nov from 7.30pm to 9pm and the Banbury Branch practice on Thurs 10th Dec from 7.30pm to 9pm

A Vanished Past:

Horley Clare Marchant Vol 1Horley Clare Marchant Vol 2

Hope your enjoying this glimpse into Horley’s past? Some aspects have really changed and yet there is something enduring about our village community that still prevails today. I have worked with Clare Marchant to “look inside” her book(s) and share an overview of the contents, contributors and the stories of life in Horley earlier in the last century.  Posted so far are:

Next we will look at the change during this period, the decline and regeneration, and take a “now and then” view.  There will be some stories of those that lived and worked in Horley in jobs such as a Cowman, a Oilman and a Farm Labourer. There will be a story by Clare’s sister that she wrote for her children about her life growing up here, a story of a couple who lived in Chapel Cottage and a actor of West End and movie fame.

Remember this is just a glimpse there is so much more, what a wonderful present it would be for Christmas, order now to avoid disappointment.

These extracts as from A Vanished Past (Vol 1 & 2), each Volume is £15 +P&P  or you can buy both for £33 incl. p&p.  They are available directly from Clare , Shaftesbury House, 15 Circus Street, Greenwich, London SE10 8SN or marchantclare@hotmail or call on 020 8858 8529. Cheques payable

With Advent these days swamped by Christmas and its busyness we thought we’d try something a bit Adventish in the weeks before Advent officially begins.  We have three occasions of rather different kinds but all, we hope, helping towards a proper preparation for Christ’s coming at Christmas and his coming at the end of time in judgement.

  • Monday  9th there will be a session on Varieties of Prayer led by the Associate Vicar;
  • Monday 16th the Revd Geoff van der Weegen, Prior of the Order of Anglican Cistercians, will consider with us Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s painting The Census at Bethlehem;
  • Monday 23rd Karen Fairfax-Cholmeley, a member of Kairos Britain, which works for a just peace for Palestine, will talk about the organisation and the Palestinian situation.

All taking place in the Old School, Horley in November. starting at 7.30pm.  Admission is free and refreshments will be available. All good wishes, Hugh

We Are A Digital Year Old – August 2015

The  Horley Views went digital with its first post  “And There Was A Secret Horley Fest” on 17th August 2014. Actually it was a repost of a blog that Carlie Lee wrote a year earlier about Horley Fest. Since then we have put up over 150 posts on the home page newsfeed (blog) and created 61 pages about Horley on the website. Most of the content has been provided by our villagers who organise the many groups and activities. THANK YOU for your efforts; you are the backbone of our small but perfectly formed community.

We Brits are not big on that “praise thang” however everyone that Di and I have spoken to about thehorleyviews.com have said that they really enjoy reading it. We also know that over 80 of you that follow via email and wordpress, as well as just over 200 on Facebook and Twitter. Some of you have told me they have book marked us as a favourite and check in regularly.

One of the reasons social media is so brilliant is that we can instantly see if the content is being looked at. There are stats for the number of views, visitors, whether they come direct or via another media. We can create graphs such this one below showing by country the 10, 500 views that, 9,500 as you would expect are in the UK.  We can be pretty sure on who is viewing in the US, France, Bahrain and those down under but who knew our little corner of North Oxfordshire was so global!THV global readership

Another aspect of social media that helps is the fact that we instantly share the posts with our twitter feed (@horleyviews) and Facebook page (horley.views). We also follow with other Horley groups such as the Horley Cricket Club site, or on facebook Horley Playgroup , these and many Other Links, Local Villages and Gastropubs as seen in the right column, be sure to scroll down.

We have a rising star in out midst as Judy has not only found fame on our website and Facebook pages but now even has her own twitter hashtag …. #SelfieWithJudy

What started out as an online news feed for Horley Views Magazine has become a website for all our activities and where Horley Parish Council can openly share its information. We are also really pleased to be able to share some of our Pub’s successes and events – Dave and Natasha are really at the heart this village. But our boundaries don’t stop at the 30mph sign – we also have close ties with our neighbours especially Hornton and Hanwell, and families and friends who live there and nearby.

So what’s in store for our second digital year???

Well it’s up to you; it’s your resource and you can share whatever you would like, in whatever format. We would love to get more people involved and support any ideas you may have. You don’t have to understand the technology you just need to be passionate about something and want to share it.

It could be anything about Horley Life,  or something you are involved that would be of interest.  How about a living memory history of Horley? Photo Album? Country life and farming? A history group like Hornton?  Or a guess the baby photo competition , yes that right  I still have them from a village fete years ago! Let us know, Di & Deb …………….

To approve the Annual Accounting and Annual Governance Statements for 2014/2015, prior to their submission for both internal and external audit.  Copies of the proposed Statements are attached at annex 1 to this report.  Under the new Transparency Code the Council is required to publish copies of these Statements on the website, and in addition, details of expenditure and a bank reconciliation.  The document prepared for this purpose is attached at Annex 2 to this report. b. To approve a risk assessment and an asset register which have been prepared for audit purposes, and copies of which are attached at annex 3 to this report.
10)  Planning
To consider and agree the Council’s response to application number 15/00673/OUT at Horley Mill Garage, Wroxton Lane, Horley.  A copy of the application will be presented at the meeting. Members wishing to inspect the application in advance of the meeting may do so, either by contacting the Clerk, or online at www.publicaccess.cherwell.gov.uk/onlineapplications .
11)  Speedwatch Exercise
As previously discussed, a speedwatch exercise was carried out on 24 April 2015 between approximately 8.00am and 9.00am. The equipment was provided by the Police Community Support Officer, PCSO Bailey, who was assisted by Cllr Hamer and the Clerk.  Not all the equipment provided by the Police functioned correctly, but a radar device was available which allowed the speed of vehicles to be checked.  The check was carried out in Hornton Lane in the vicinity of the Church Lane junction, and 40 to 50 vehicles passed while the exercise was taking place.  Only one was recorded as speeding (35 mph) although several others were observed to slow down when they saw the check taking place and before it was possible to record their speed.  As this was not an official speed trap, the motorist recorded as speeding will receive a warning letter only from the Police Authority.
12)  Kerbing works in Wroxton Lane
Members will be aware that the Council has placed an order with Titchmarsh Construction to undertake some kerbing works in Wroxton Lane.  Very recently Titchmarsh Construction have contacted the Council advising that they have been unable to obtain authority from Oxfordshire County Council to carry out the proposed works on the highway.  It appears that OCC have indicated that they consider the work should be carried out by their term contractor who previously had provided a somewhat higher quotation for the work.  It is not clear what has caused this apparent change of heart by OCC, as they recommended the Council to contact Titchmarsh Construction some time ago.  The Clerk is pursuing the matter with OCC and will update Members at the meeting.
13)  Date of next meeting
To be agreed at item 6 above.
14)  Any other urgent business
