What’s New – April

Yes its April…..

Our small but perfectly formed community can now boast both an award winning pub and cricket club in our village, congratulations to both.

This is our 92nd post, 55 pages, over 6500 views and 211 followers in various forms: email, blog, Facebook and Twitter. So “thehorleyviews” has definitely gone social, with each media having different levels of interaction, and with Facebook being the most active.

So what’s in store now the clocks have gone forward?

The calendar is filling up with lots of events over Easter and beyond, hese are some of them:

MAUNDY THURSDAY (2nd April)– after the success of the Palm Sunday Pilgrimage, there will be another one this Thursday, starting at 1.15 at Hanwell Church, walkingonto Drayton and Wroxton with a traditional Maundy Thursday washing of feet service. There will then be a Passover meal along the lines of the Jewish Seder in Shenington at 6.30 in the Church Hall. Followed by a Eucharist service in the Church at 7.30. If you would like to come to any or all of this, you are very welcome, please let the Reverend Dr. Hugh White know on 01869 347889.

Just in case you missed what Lucy put in the Banbury Guardian:

SEWING CIRCLE – Do you enjoy sewing at home? Soft furnishings or dressmaking? Would you like to extend your skills or share them with like-minded people in Horley? A sewing circle has been suggested which would be held once a month/ fortnight in the Old school. The organisers are looking at numbers and feasibility at the moment. If you would like to express an interest, please let Sue Patching know on 730039.

CRICKET –Thank you to everyone who came along and supported the registration evening at the Old School last week. A great number of juniors have already signed up, please remember that last year the Cricket Club didn’t have enough places so if you haven’t joined but would like to, get your forms back to Judith Beck in Horley as soon as possible. The first cricket practice is on Tuesday April 28.

PALM SUNDAY PILGRIMAGE  was held last Sunday. Despite atrocious weather, a happy band of Pilgrims met in Alkerton for a short service and then made their way over to Hornton where they were served welcome refreshment at the Methodist Chapel. More joined on as the Pilgrimage continued to Horley where an eagerly received lunch was served up by Natasha in The Red Lion. Thoroughly refreshed, the pilgrims continued onto Hanwell with better weather in the afternoon. Many thanks to the Reverend Dr. Hugh White for organising this Pilgrimage. Despite the weather, everyone enjoyed the walk and especially the delicious lunch at the Red Lion.

DOG MESS – Dog mess is again becoming a problem in Horley, particularly on the bridleway off Hornton Lane heading eastwards as you go out of the village. Dog waste bags are available free of charge – please see Maureen Keenan in Lane Close. Everyone should pick up their dog waste – it is your responsibility! Let’s all keep the village clean, thank you.

BROWNIES – Hornton Brownies takes place every Monday evening from 5-6.30 in the Pavilion, Hornton. Liz Hirst needs more adult help, someone who she can call on occasionally and will look after the brownies. If you would be interested in helping please call Liz on 670125. Also if your child is interested in joining brownies, contact Liz because there are still places available.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM – In the summer of 2015 A Midsummer Night’s Dream is being performed by children and adults of Horley. If your child would like to be in it please contact Tessa Howell as rehearsals are in full swing. To catch up with the practices going on at the moment, or missed rehearsals, contact Tessa on 738313.

We have had 5 x domestic oil thefts in North Newington in the last 9 days. 1 in School Lane, 1 in Main street and 3 in Park lane. Please alert neighbours and remain extra vigilant. If you saw anything suspicious in your area or have any information that may help with police enquiries please telephone Banbury Rural  Neighbourhood  Police Team on 101. Alternatively if you have information that could help us but wish to remain anonymous, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I’m sitting on the fallen oak, the sun on my face. I’m protected here from the wind, a bare-twigged hedge of elder and hawthorn rears high behind me.

From here I can see the line of the Sor Brook, with its alders. One of my favourite oaks is in the middle of the line. I can’t see them from here, but I know that below the oak are the long blue spears of nascent daffodil bulbs, in amongst the Herb Robert. There are no flowers yet, but they will come.

My legs are hot and I’m sleepy from getting up early to write. It has been an endlessly grey week, filled with self-doubt and cold bones, deleted paragraphs and stunted scenes. But now the blackness has dissipated, dissolved, despite my Prosecco head.

My finger nails are dirty from digging. Earlier, I moved my fruit bushes, tackled my middle veg bed. I worked…

It is Official The Red Lion, Horley Wins Pub of the Year!!!

North Oxfordshire noxoncamraBranch Pub of the Year Winner is: The Red Lion, Horley.

We are very pleased to announce the results of the 2015 branch Pub of the Year contest.  This year there were 8 finalists shortlisted, each of which featured real ale of the highest quality making the judging all the more difficult.  Nevertheless, winners had to be selected. Thanks to all those who participated in the judging process.
This year’s winner is: The Red Lion, Horley.
Runner up : The Pear Tree Inn, Hook Norton.
Third place : The Bell, Adderbury.
Congratulations to all the finalists, especially to our top 3. Please keep a lookout on our website news for details of the forthcoming certificate presentations.  15/03/15

hccHorley Cricket Club is a vibrant and progressive village club in North Oxfordshire. Having joined the Cherwell League from the OCA League in 2012 the Club has gone from strength-to-strength receiving the Peter Baker Trophy for Club of the Year in 2012 and 2014. The two Saturday XI’s and the Sunday XI are fed from the prosperous Youth section that coaches 70 kids every Tuesday and Wednesday. Palm Sunday Pilgrimage – Via The Red Lion

palm With Holy Week just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about the Pilgrimage which will be taking place from  Worcester to the Ironstone Benefice.  On Palm Sunday, after a short service we will walk from Alketon to Hornton. The Pilgrims will leave after a short service starting at 9.45. When we reach Hornton ( at approx.  11.50) there will be a short service in St. John Baptist Church, followed by prayers in the Methodist Chapel. After that it will be a walk across the fields to Horley, with prayers at 1.20, followed by lunch in the Red Lion at 1.30. Feeling well rested, it’s onto Hanwell for Evensong at 3. You make take part in the whole walk, or just come along for parts of it. But please let The Reverend Hugh know if you intend to have lunch at The Red Lion as Natasha will need to know numbers.

This year Palm Sunday falls on March 29th.

Progressive Dinner Around Horley – 27th June

progressive_dinnerA date for your diary for this years Progressive Dinner (last year only aka Safari Supper).

This annual highlight of the Horley social calendar has come around a little earlier than last year – as we took note that it may be better to try and navigate between hosts in as much daylight as possible….

So 27th June is set as the date to once again showcase the culinary talents of various hosts around the village and to once again meet faces that you see regularly but never get the chance to speak to. For the uninitiated – we meet in the Red Lion, where for the exchange of £20 and a bottle of wine you will then receive the first of three envelopes detailing your journey around the village.  Another two courses/houses await you – with the end destination back in the pub to discuss your expeditions.  It’s great fun – and also has the added benefit of raising much needed funds for the church.

New Season Cricket Update

View from Spring FieldIt is a beautiful day as I write of the season to come and soon we will be back at the Cricket ground for the summer. Cricket comes round very quickly after Christmas and our planning is well under way – machinery is being repaired thoughts are turning to our working party weekend on the 28-29 March and then the cricket season begins at the end of April.

At our AGM in November the club voted for Dave Taylor to remain as 1st Team Captain, Julian Wright stood down as 2nd Team Captain, and Mark Tubb was asked to take on the role having been vice for the past few years, Dave Eaton has taken over as Sunday Captain. Julian now takes on the role of Club Captain and we wish them all well for the coming season.

Our season starts on Saturday 25th April with both teams playing Cropredy home and away in friendly matches – the first team playing at home. The following Sunday May 3rd we play Great Tew in our first venture into the Village Cup – a knockout competition which ends up with a day at Lords for the finalists. We then host the England Deaf cricket team on the Monday 4th May, this is a great honour for the club and a day we are all looking forward to.

The League then starts in earnest on Saturday 9 May with the first team hosting Bicester & North Oxford at home and the second team travel to Didcot.

Our plans for the new pavilion are progressing and we will continue to keep you informed and updated when we are in a position to do so.

There will be lots more fund raising events this year ; Quiz night early in the season, Family games evening – normally the last day of the school year, Race night

HCCDates for the Diary

Friday 27th March – Meet & Greet Player registration 7.00 – 9.00, a very popular evening when we all catch up with each other over supper which this year will be Chilli – meat and vegetarian – the cost for the Supper is £5 per adult £3 per child. Registration will be for both Senior and Junior players more details will be on our website shortly.

Saturday & Sunday 28th & 29th March – Working weekend in association with Nat West who sponsor this event – anyone is welcome to come and help as we get the ground and pavilion ready for the summer – 11am onwards

 Monday 4th May – England ‘A’ hearing impaired squad – we are proud to be hosting this team for the day, this is a unique occasion and spectators are welcome to come and watch.

 Saturday 24th October – Dinner Dance at Bloxham School.
