Did you know that you can now see collage pictures of nearly all of the Horley Footlights productions going back over a decade, starting with Mother Goose Rocks (2003) up to last years Alice.

Christmas Church Decoration

Untitled_15725447330_lCome along tomorrow  Saturday December 20th at 10.30 and join in the spirit of Christmas  by helping decorate our amazing church.  There is plenty for everyone to do with the tree , decorations and flowers as well as  practice for the children’s nativity play.

Reminder: the Nativity and Carol Service is 6pm on Sunday 21st.

Triple Festivities: Carol Service – Nativity Play – Carol Singing

Untitled_15805609527_lOn Sunday 21st at 6pm our Church will host another one of our special annual events with both the Carol Service and Nativity Play.

Then on Monday 22nd everyone who wants to join in Carol Singing around the village will meet at 6:30pm at the Old School.

Horley Christmas Market Success – Thank you

The Ladies Guild would like to thank everyone in the village and all the visitors who supported our Christmas Market and made it such an enjoyable evening, plus raised £1,649 for our amazing church.

Bell Ringing Practice and Visiting Ringers

There is a bell ringing practice this Friday 5th Dec at 19:30.

Then on Thurs 11th Dec at 19:30 visiting ringers that will treat us to a quarter peal ringing.

Its beginning to feel a lot like Christmas………. thanks to Horley’s Ladies Guild and all their “little helpers”  for making our Church so special and once again bringing us a fabulous market.

We were accompanied  by Horley’s own “Wandering Minstrels” who found themselves a nice corner to entertain the crowds as there was no room to play and wander.  At one point it was so full that someone commented its like “Black Saturday around here”.

We had a very special visit from Father Christmas and his “Elf and safety officer” who also had help from a little Elf in rearranging the grotto. Well that’s Elves for you they should be called Pixies! What that poor Father Christmas has to put up with, still at least the children have been good and went away with a presents.

Our fabulous candle lit Christmas Market is being held in St. Etheldreda’s Church on Saturday November 29th between 5 and 7pm.

Christmas MarketThanks to the Ladies Guild there are some lovely stalls already booked, as well as home made produce, Christmas decorations,  mulled wine and mince pies and of course, Father Christmas will be popping in loaded down with presents.

Latest news…… we have Horley’s very own wandering minstrels to accompany us throughout the evening and some fabulous new stalls booked to help you prepare for Christmas and get into the festival spirit

Remembrance Service

poppyHorley and Hanwell are holding a combined remembrance service at St.Etheldredra Church this Sunday 9th.

Start at 10.55am with bells at 11:00

Representative groups from both villages will lay wreathes to remember the fallen in the two world wars and conflicts since.

Harvest Celebrations this weekend

HARVEST CELEBRATION AUCTION , 7pm onwards, at the Red Lion – Friday October 3rd. All donations of fruit, produce, cakes, preserves etc. will be auctioned to raise money for the work of Save the Children in the Middle East.

HARVEST FESTIVAL SERVICE , 11am at St.Etheldreda Church – Sunday October 5th – A traditional Harvest Festival service with the bells rung afterwards.

In Britain, thanks have been given since pagan times for successful harvests and to mark the end of the main season.  Harvest festivals are traditionally held on the Sunday closest to the Harvest Moon or Autumn Equinox.

In Horley, this year we are celebrating twice over this upcoming weekend and raising money for others less fortunate than us.

Safari meaning to journey in Swahili

On Saturday 20th September, the now re-branded Safari Supper set off from the Red Lion watering hole as it turned dusk. Clutching their guide slips , all thirty-six villagers ventured to their first hosts house, meeting many of their fellow explorers on the way.

The first course is always an orderly affair, with the hosts holding back on the wine to ensure they can stay on top of the strict timings. This year was no exception, as all thirty-six villagers were promptly turned out at 8:30. Then the hosts beat a hasty retreat to get ready for the next guests, who arrived straight away, as this years hosts were all in close proximity to each other ; 1 in Little Lane, 2 in Wroxton Lane, 1 in Gulivers Close and 2 in Lower Hornton  Lane.

Once dinner is served the hosts can also relax a little and so do their guests. So much so, that some hosts reported and I personally witnessed a reluctance of some of the guests to move on to their next hosts.

red lionDespite this everyone eventually arrived at their third and final host. This is where many of them remained until way past Dave and Natasha’s bedtime, before returning to the Red Lion.

This year we had some new hosts, new guests and some relatively new guests, so seeing the supper through their eyes reminded me of what a great social event this is.

To top it all we raised over £720 for our church.

As for reported sightings, so far there hasn’t been any, however the jungle drums are sometimes slow to start…………..
