JUDAISM IN BRITAIN TODAY – On Monday the 12th of October we are delighted to have secured Penny Faust from the Oxford Synagogue she is coming to outline aspects of Jewish Life . Penny did research in child psychology before stopping to have 4 children and then went into broadcasting/journalism including being a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4’s – Thought for the Day for 12 years and to World Service religious broadcasting. She has also worked in education and currently contributes to the Oxford Mail on an ad hoc basis. This event will be held at St John the Baptist Church Hornton, at 7.30pm and refreshments will be on offer beforehand and during the interval, as they were in Wroxton. So please do come along as the Church can seat 114 people and this will be a fascinating insightful evening.

3H’s GARDENING CLUB – On Tuesday 13th October at 7:30pm in the Pavilion at Hornton there will be a slide show and talk given by Howard Drury, a Lincolnshire Lad, trained Edinburgh Botanics, 610 Gardening Programmes for Central TV Gardener  and gives talks on almost 100 subjects  and also into computers! The topic is a surprise, always informative and entertaining as he is a regular presenter at the club. All welcome Thanks Brian A

Did you get up early on Monday morning (28th September) to see the Super Blood Moon eclipse, Hanwell Observatory ‎estimated it would be best seen at 03:47am BST when the moon should appear red due to light bent by the earth’s atmosphere.

harvest festival auctionHarvest Festival – two events this week the first on Friday  (tomorrow) 2nd October 7:00pm at The Red Lion and sees the return of the ever popular Harvest Festival Auction. Please either drop off your produce or bring it with you at 7:00.

Then this Sunday October 4, 11:00 at St. Ethedreda’s Church a traditional Harvest Holy Communion.

Vanished Past Volume 1A Vanished Past – Clare Marchant has kindly agreed to let us take a “look inside” her two books to share some photo’s and excerpts. Here are two emails we’ve received from former Horleyites ….

 A Vanished Past Volume 2Hi Debra, Thank you for replying to my email and yes, of course, it’s quite o.k. for you to include my email in the October update. Although I have not visited Horley in a number of years I am always very happy to see photographs of the village and read all the events taking place. I must say I think the people who now live there are exceptionally lucky to have such a wonderful calendar of events. I hope to be in the Banbury area in the early part of October and, time permitting, I will certainly come through Horley and look at the houses which have been built in the field (Astells) behind the house where I once lived.   I am in touch with Clare and spent a lovely time with her recently and also met up with Shan after a very long time (1965) it was such a good feeling.    Looking forward to reading the October update! With best wishes Pat (the daughter of Vic and Lucy Shawyer of Box Cottage)”

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM – Took place in our magical church last weekend, and was the most spectacular production so far. In addition to the “5 Reasons” each and every actor played their parts brilliantly, the feedback from each of the audiences was that they were amazed at how highly entertaining and professional it was. Full credit goes to Tessa Howell for her brilliant creativity in reducing this play to its pure essence and re-imagining it here in our church. Tessa adapted the script and had been struggling to recruit the cast for over a year. It was also no mean feat managing the scheduling of the rehearsals ; only on the final dress rehearsal the did she have a full cast!

Tessa always encouraged the cast to do their best and although you will probably find this hard to believe she did on occasion even shout at them, ensuring they played their role to their full potential.  Tessa paid special thanks to David Kyle for his musical contribution and to Mike Patching for all his help with the stage, music and lighting.  She says this is her last production and what a high to end on….. however we have a feeling that our sprite-like, inexhaustible and incorrigible director may be persuaded to do another small adult production, never say never – “Lord, what fools these mortals be!”

Reminder: The Parish Council pages are frequently updated; see the Notice Board for items that are sent to the Parish Clerk that may be of interest; see Planning  for applications that are received and those decided. Also due to the transparency requirements all Parish Council Meetings agendas are published in advance and then the resulting meeting minutes are posted.

What’s New – September 2015

WHAT a September we have in store for our beautiful medieval church with not one but

Two marvellous events:

Ironstone ConcertsNext weekend Friday 11th and Saturday 12th the Ironstone Chamber Music Festival and a Choral Mass at the Sunday Service. Organised by Chris and Tessa Howell, If you haven’t already done so you can still get you tickets 

msndThen on Friday 25th, Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th a Horley Footlights production of Midsummer Night’s Dream, see the 5 reasons not to miss … once again produced and directed by Tessa Howell – see the “fly on the wall” report (… more to come) with all the  backstage gossip !

Both events as you can see are brought to us by Mr & Mrs Howell, thank you Tessa and Chris for everything you bring to our village.

It’s Arrived , No More “Buffer Face”

wroxton laneFor those eager to get with the 21st Century….. Wroxton Lane is now accepting orders!
   So please share your experiences in selecting a supplier, as although BT are the wholesaler they are not the only providers,  you can now buy these services from mobile providers as well.
   Remember we are not just talking the usual internet services  (insert “buffer face”) but everything digital (including TV) and on multiple devices.
   So shop around and see what packages there are and please share if you find a good deal.

We Are A Digital Year Old – August 2015

The  Horley Views went digital with its first post  “And There Was A Secret Horley Fest” on 17th August 2014. Actually it was a repost of a blog that Carlie Lee wrote a year earlier about Horley Fest. Since then we have put up over 150 posts on the home page newsfeed (blog) and created 61 pages about Horley on the website. Most of the content has been provided by our villagers who organise the many groups and activities. THANK YOU for your efforts; you are the backbone of our small but perfectly formed community.

We Brits are not big on that “praise thang” however everyone that Di and I have spoken to about thehorleyviews.com have said that they really enjoy reading it. We also know that over 80 of you that follow via email and wordpress, as well as just over 200 on Facebook and Twitter. Some of you have told me they have book marked us as a favourite and check in regularly.

One of the reasons social media is so brilliant is that we can instantly see if the content is being looked at. There are stats for the number of views, visitors, whether they come direct or via another media. We can create graphs such this one below showing by country the 10, 500 views that, 9,500 as you would expect are in the UK.  We can be pretty sure on who is viewing in the US, France, Bahrain and those down under but who knew our little corner of North Oxfordshire was so global!THV global readership

Another aspect of social media that helps is the fact that we instantly share the posts with our twitter feed (@horleyviews) and Facebook page (horley.views). We also follow with other Horley groups such as the Horley Cricket Club site, or on facebook Horley Playgroup , these and many Other Links, Local Villages and Gastropubs as seen in the right column, be sure to scroll down.

We have a rising star in out midst as Judy has not only found fame on our website and Facebook pages but now even has her own twitter hashtag …. #SelfieWithJudy

What started out as an online news feed for Horley Views Magazine has become a website for all our activities and where Horley Parish Council can openly share its information. We are also really pleased to be able to share some of our Pub’s successes and events – Dave and Natasha are really at the heart this village. But our boundaries don’t stop at the 30mph sign – we also have close ties with our neighbours especially Hornton and Hanwell, and families and friends who live there and nearby.

So what’s in store for our second digital year???

Well it’s up to you; it’s your resource and you can share whatever you would like, in whatever format. We would love to get more people involved and support any ideas you may have. You don’t have to understand the technology you just need to be passionate about something and want to share it.

It could be anything about Horley Life,  or something you are involved that would be of interest.  How about a living memory history of Horley? Photo Album? Country life and farming? A history group like Hornton?  Or a guess the baby photo competition , yes that right  I still have them from a village fete years ago! Let us know, Di & Deb …………….

This photo is up in the Old School without a date, any ideas? I know it was before 1996 as the conifers are all still lined up round our place, it looks like building work at the Dairy Court ……… any other clues??? What On This Week – July 13th

teddy bear picnicThis week sees the beginning of the school summer holidays and many of the groups tent to also take a break.

This morning is Horley Playgroup end of term Teddy Bears Picnic party, be sure to bring along your favourite soft toy and a plate of goodies for lunch (might also need a mac and umbrella) !

Yoga will continue until 29th July and return 2nd September as will the Cinema Club return in September.

Cricket Club is in full swing with matches, fitness training and the Summer Games this Friday.

What’s On – 8th June

buntingThe main event this week is the HORLEY VILLAGE SUMMER FETE it takes place this Saturday, June 13. Come along and enjoy this wonderful annual event from 2 to 5pm, in the Old School and Church.

Raffle Prize Draw – first prize £100 cash, second prize a BMW for a weekend, there are stalls for Tombola, Plants, Bric-a-brac, homemade cakes, nice or nasty jam jars, water or wine, teas and many more.

(Donations of cakes and homemade produce please drop off on Saturday morning )

What’s New – June

…and so to June and the Summer Solstice….

june-solstice-illustrationYayeeee it’s the month of the longest day of the year,  the Summer Solstice , which is when the sun is at its maximum elevation.

Interestingly, Solstice or Litha means a stopping or standing still of the sun, so here’s to the sun “resting” over us for a long summer!

Events:

buntingJune is the month of the Summer Fete (13th) which is organised by the Ladies Guild and seems to grow in popularity every year. It’s a great opportunity to detox your cupboards and if you’re lucky you might even win your stuff back! Before that in Hanwell there is HANFEST (6th/7th) a two day art exhibition and evening concert. Back in Horley we are packed with cricket  events, the last two Cinema showings until September (Mr Turner  & Selma ), the Progressive Dinner (27th), and all the usual weekly activities. Find out about these and more events in our village Calendar.

New & Updated Pages:

The Village page has Village Maps, and want goes into the Banbury Guardian weekly, plus alerts, walks and history.  The Church page has information about the team behind the scenes and what the Wardens get up to. Parish Council Page have been updated with agenda & minutes together, notice board, and planning applications as they are received.

We have now created pages that represent all of the groups and interests in Horley, if there is anything else you would like seen added to our Village Website let us know. Maybe a Horley memories page where we can share photos and stories?
