In 2015, there were 175 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 220 posts.

The busiest day of the year was October 5th with 185 views, with the most popular post that day was Wow That’s A Lot of Apples!.

Thehorleyviews was viewed about 17,000 times in 2015. There were 336 pictures uploaded, averaging about 6 pictures per week.

Most visitors came from United Kingdom with the United States & Bahrain not far behind, from a total of 63 countries.

Horley Gets Its Own Defibrillator…

It’s our new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) that has recently been installed on the wall outside the Red Lion (soon to be commissioned ). This is expected to happen within the next few days – as soon as the white notice disappears then the machine is fully functioning so keep an eye out.

For more information on your new AED and how to take part in a specially arranged training session on Wednesday November 18th  see below and information on the Parish Notice Board.

This potentially lifesaving device has been procured by the Parish Council from the Community Heartbeat Trust, and has been installed on the front wall of the Red Lion close to the telephone box. It will become available for use in the next few days, as soon as it is registered with the ambulance service.

A defibrillator (AED) is used in cases of cardiac arrest or arrhythmia, when swift action can make all the difference to a patient’s chances of survival. If you or someone you are with appears to be suffering from a cardiac condition, the first thing to do is always to ring 999. If it appears that the use of a defibrillator is called for, the operator will be able to direct you to the Horley AED, and will be able to supply the secure access code to open the locked cabinet door. The AED contains simple instructions and is fully automated, so it will not operate unless it detects an irregular heartbeat.

Whilst the AED can be used without any training, the Parish Council has arranged for Community Heartbeat to provide a session which anyone in the village is welcome to attend. This will cover how and when the AED should be used, together with other resuscitation techniques and related issues. The training will take place at the Old School at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 18 November. Anyone intending to attend the session is asked to notify the Clerk to the Parish Council, David Marriott, in advance, by emailing him at horleyparishclerk@btinternet.com, or by calling him on 07872 930030.

 

Wow That’s A Lot of Apples!

Havest AuctionWho would have thought that all those home-grown apples, vegetables and flowers, as well as those home made cakes would have raised so much money at the Harvest Auction. Last Friday 2nd October, Dave and Natasha hosted the ever popular Harvest Festival Auction  in The Red Lion. See the fireplace photo showing all the flowers, there was also a table and surrounding area full of beautifully displayed donated produce . The evening raised an amazing  £675.50 that will be split between Save the Children – Syria Refuge Crisis and The Banbury Young Homeless Project. Dave and Natasha would like to thank everyone who donated and bought the produce, and made it such a successful event.

Special thanks to Tash and Dave for all their efforts in once again putting their pub at the heart our village.

What’s New – October 2015

Did you get up early on Monday morning (28th September) to see the Super Blood Moon eclipse, Hanwell Observatory ‎estimated it would be best seen at 03:47am BST when the moon should appear red due to light bent by the earth’s atmosphere.

 A Vanished Past Volume 2Hi Debra, Thank you for replying to my email and yes, of course, it’s quite o.k. for you to include my email in the October update. Although I have not visited Horley in a number of years I am always very happy to see photographs of the village and read all the events taking place. I must say I think the people who now live there are exceptionally lucky to have such a wonderful calendar of events. I hope to be in the Banbury area in the early part of October and, time permitting, I will certainly come through Horley and look at the houses which have been built in the field (Astells) behind the house where I once lived.   I am in touch with Clare and spent a lovely time with her recently and also met up with Shan after a very long time (1965) it was such a good feeling.    Looking forward to reading the October update! With best wishes Pat (the daughter of Vic and Lucy Shawyer of Box Cottage)”

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM – Took place in our magical church last weekend, and was the most spectacular production so far. In addition to the “5 Reasons” each and every actor played their parts brilliantly, the feedback from each of the audiences was that they were amazed at how highly entertaining and professional it was. Full credit goes to Tessa Howell for her brilliant creativity in reducing this play to its pure essence and re-imagining it here in our church. Tessa adapted the script and had been struggling to recruit the cast for over a year. It was also no mean feat managing the scheduling of the rehearsals ; only on the final dress rehearsal the did she have a full cast!

Tessa always encouraged the cast to do their best and although you will probably find this hard to believe she did on occasion even shout at them, ensuring they played their role to their full potential.  Tessa paid special thanks to David Kyle for his musical contribution and to Mike Patching for all his help with the stage, music and lighting.  She says this is her last production and what a high to end on….. however we have a feeling that our sprite-like, inexhaustible and incorrigible director may be persuaded to do another small adult production, never say never – “Lord, what fools these mortals be!”

SCBUA big thank you from Dave and Tash for supporting a charity afternoon tea on the very rainy bank holiday Monday . We raised a massive £340 (yes from tea and cakes)  for the Special Care Baby Unit fund at the Oxford Children’s Hospital . A even bigger thank you for all the ladies that helped, what a amazing effort.

Also a date for you diary the 2nd October sees the ever popular Harvest Festival Auction.

We Are A Digital Year Old – August 2015

The  Horley Views went digital with its first post  “And There Was A Secret Horley Fest” on 17th August 2014. Actually it was a repost of a blog that Carlie Lee wrote a year earlier about Horley Fest. Since then we have put up over 150 posts on the home page newsfeed (blog) and created 61 pages about Horley on the website. Most of the content has been provided by our villagers who organise the many groups and activities. THANK YOU for your efforts; you are the backbone of our small but perfectly formed community.

We Brits are not big on that “praise thang” however everyone that Di and I have spoken to about thehorleyviews.com have said that they really enjoy reading it. We also know that over 80 of you that follow via email and wordpress, as well as just over 200 on Facebook and Twitter. Some of you have told me they have book marked us as a favourite and check in regularly.

One of the reasons social media is so brilliant is that we can instantly see if the content is being looked at. There are stats for the number of views, visitors, whether they come direct or via another media. We can create graphs such this one below showing by country the 10, 500 views that, 9,500 as you would expect are in the UK.  We can be pretty sure on who is viewing in the US, France, Bahrain and those down under but who knew our little corner of North Oxfordshire was so global!THV global readership

Another aspect of social media that helps is the fact that we instantly share the posts with our twitter feed (@horleyviews) and Facebook page (horley.views). We also follow with other Horley groups such as the Horley Cricket Club site, or on facebook Horley Playgroup , these and many Other Links, Local Villages and Gastropubs as seen in the right column, be sure to scroll down.

We have a rising star in out midst as Judy has not only found fame on our website and Facebook pages but now even has her own twitter hashtag …. #SelfieWithJudy

What started out as an online news feed for Horley Views Magazine has become a website for all our activities and where Horley Parish Council can openly share its information. We are also really pleased to be able to share some of our Pub’s successes and events – Dave and Natasha are really at the heart this village. But our boundaries don’t stop at the 30mph sign – we also have close ties with our neighbours especially Hornton and Hanwell, and families and friends who live there and nearby.

So what’s in store for our second digital year???

Well it’s up to you; it’s your resource and you can share whatever you would like, in whatever format. We would love to get more people involved and support any ideas you may have. You don’t have to understand the technology you just need to be passionate about something and want to share it.

It could be anything about Horley Life,  or something you are involved that would be of interest.  How about a living memory history of Horley? Photo Album? Country life and farming? A history group like Hornton?  Or a guess the baby photo competition , yes that right  I still have them from a village fete years ago! Let us know, Di & Deb …………….

A (reduced) Midsummers Night Dream, its fully casted and rehearsals in full swing. It’s going to be a fantastic production staged in our church, with some surprise debut performances as well as our wonderful usual “luvies”.
