THANKYOU FROM THE LADIES GUILD – Horley Village Ladies Guild would like to thank all those in the village who supported the summer fete. The total raised was £1780 which will contribute to the upkeep of the Church. Without the generosity of the sponsors or those who kindly donated raffle prizes as well as those who came along, it would not have been the success it was.

HORLEY CINEMA – Villagers will be pleased to hear that Horley Cinema will resume screening after the July-August break. This month’s film is A Walk in the Woods (cert 15). This will be shown at The Old School Horley on Friday September 16. Doors open at 7.30, lights down at 8. £5 on the door. CHURCH SERVICES – On Sunday September 18 there will be no service in Horley. There is café church at 10.30 in Wroxton School. This is a great service for younger children as there are lots of activities and fun things to get involved doing!

COFFEE MORNING – advanced notice that the monthly all generations coffee morning will be on Thursday September 29 at 10.30.

VILLAGE WHIST DRIVE – Come along for a fun evening playing whist on Friday October 14, organised by the Michael Hardinge Trust. Experienced players and novices are welcome. There will also be a meal provided in the evening and further details will be sent out via flyer nearer the time.

W.I. LAST WEEK – Hornton and District women’s institute met last Thursday in the Chapel, Hornton. This month, the talk was “A Tudor Harvest” and members were entertained by the Lord of Sulgrave Manor. They learned all about the harvest in Tudor times and how everyone would be involved in gathering in the food for the Winter. Next month’s meeting will take place on Thursday October 6 when members will be treated to a talk on the comedy of parenting.

CRICK-FIT – Summer Crick has now come to an end. Many thanks to all those who have enjoyed meeting on a Thursday evening for a fun exercise class based on a cricket theme. And thanks also to Claire Bottoms for organising and running the classes every week.

JUNIOR CRICKET – has also come to an end so there will be no more practices on Tuesday evenings.

IRONSTONE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL – will take place tomorrow, Friday September 9 at 7.30 in St. Etheldreda’s Church Horley. There will be music by Dvorak, Kodaly and Mozart. On Saturday September 10 at 12.30 in Hanwell Church, there will be Sonatas and Duets by Bach and a new work
Sandwich lunch at Moon & Sixpence following the concert. (Please book ahead.) The final performance is on Saturday September 10 at 7.30 pm in St Etheldreda’s Church. This includes music by Haydn, Mendelssohn and a Post-concert Supper after evening concerts. (Please book ahead.) On Sunday September 11 at 11.00 am there is Mass by Mozart in St Etheldreda’s. JUNIOR CRICKET COMES TO A CLOSE – Unfortunately, the junior cricket practices which take place very Tuesday have come to a finish. The last training session was Tuesday 30. The annual Parents vs Children matches will take place on Sunday (September 4.) The younger children vs their parents match will take place at 10.30. There will then be a BBQ lunch, followed by the trophy presentation. Then the older players vs parents match will happen in the afternoon

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING – The next Parish Council Meeting will take place at 7.30 on Thursday August 25 in the Old School Room. RED LION – BACK OPEN – Horley’s Red Lion is now back open following the recent refurbishment. Pop along for a relaxing drink and enjoy live sport, especially the Olympics.

ADDITIONAL CRICKET CLUB BAR HOURS – The cricket club bar is open whenever there is a match being played in addition until the end of July we will be open: Tuesday – Thursday 6:00 – 10.00, Friday from 6:00, Saturday and Sunday 2pm onwards. To all Horley Villagers: you are welcome to come along have a drink and watch some cricket.

W.I. TONIGHT – Hornton and district W.I. meet tonight, Thursday August 4 at 7.30 and it’s back in the Chapel Hornton. This month’s meeting will be an evening of musical entertainment with a difference. The competition is a homemade musical instrument!

SUMMER LIGHTS EVENING – Tomorrow, Friday August 5 from 7pm, at Horley Cricket Club there will be a Summer Lights evening. This will be a great evening in aid of McMillian Cancer and Breast Cancer Care. There will be a raffle, bar, cheese boards and a bring and buy. Everyone is welcome to bring their chairs and blankets, sit out in the sun and enjoy a great night!
KNIT AND STITCH – there will be a summer break from the social knit and stitch group which meets twice a month in the old school. The next evening it will take place is Thursday September 8. Any one new planning to come along will be welcome.

SHAKESPEARE MEDLEY – To mark the 400th year anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, a selection from his works were performed by adults and children from Horley last Saturday. More than £300 was raised to go towards the church fund. A big thank you to everyone who came along to watch, the brilliant performances and everyone else who contributed. A big thanks to Tessa Howell who directed the whole thing!

HORLEY COFFEE MORNING – the All Generations monthly Coffee Morning is today! This will be at 10.30 in the Old School. Everyone welcome.

CRICKET CLUB AUCTION – Horley Cricket Club’s auction of promises took place on Sunday July 10 and the club came together across all playing age groups, social members, supporters and villagers to raise in total over £2,500 for the new pavilion fund – way beyond the wildest expectations of the Fundraising Committee. A big thank you to all who made promises and all who bid for them! What a successful fundraiser!

SUMMER GAMES EVENING – Horley Village’s annual summer games evening/sports day, will happen tomorrow Friday July 22. This is a fun evening for all ages with family races, bar, lottery, BBQ, tombola and much more with and activities for all. This will take place on the cricket field for most of the evening. Everyone welcome.

WARRINER SCHOOL FINISH – The Warriner School break up for the summer on Wednesday July 20 at 12.30.

SUMMER GAMES EVENING – Horley Village’s annual summer games evening will happen on Friday July 22. This is a fun evening for all ages with games and activities for all. This will take place on the cricket field for most of the evening. Everyone welcome.

SUMMER CONCERT – The Warriner School’s Music Department’s Summer Concert will take place in the Main School Hall on Wednesday July 13 at 7 pm. The concert will include performances from The Funk Band, Orchestra, Glee Club and Sixth Form Choir. The cost of tickets is £5.00 for adults. Students from the Warriner may collect tickets from the Finance Department at Break or Lunchtimes from Wednesday June 29 onwards.

W.I. NEXT WEEK – Hornton and District W.I. meet next Thursday at 7.30 in the Pavilion Hornton. This month it’s a social meeting. The competition is a rosette.

HORLEY SUMMER FETE – Horley’s Summer Fete this year is on Saturday June 25 from 2-5 in the Church and Old school! Stalls include a Raffle Prize Draw – first prize £100 cash, second prize a BMW for a weekend, tombola, plants, bric-a-brac, homemade cakes, nice or nasty jam jars, water or wine, teas and cakes, pimms and a BBQ. Come along and enjoy and support this lovely village event. The fete takes place from 2-5 in the Church and the Old School.

RATLEY SUMMER FETE – Ratley Village’s Fete and 1940’s Festival takes place at Ratley Recreation Ground on Saturday June 25 from 4-7. It’s free entry and all proceeds go towards the village hall roof. Some attractions are a Hawker Hurricane Flypast, Parade, Tug of War, Grand Hamper Raffle, Live Music (1940’s inspired), BBQ, Beer/Pimms/Gin Fizz Tent, ice creams, Afternoon tea, Punch & Judy and Car displays. There is lots to do for children, including races, games and teddy tombola. Come along and support this social and entertaining 1940’s themed event.

HHH GARDENING CLUB – The Three Hs Gardening Club is named after the three villages it serves – Horley, Hornton and Hanwell. Meetings take place at 7.30 pm in the Hornton Pavillion, usually on the second Tuesday of the month. There is a guest speaker at each meeting followed by coffee/tea and biscuits. Meetings are free to members. Non-members (visitors to the area or those who are interested in joining) are charged 50p, including refreshments. Joy Hillman is the Chairman and new members are always welcome, just come along to the meetings. Membership is £6 per year, running from May to the following April. Club funds rely significantly on the annual plant sale in May to produce money to keep the membership fee so low.

HORLEY CHURCH CLOCK RESTORATION – Horley, has many times had the descriptive word ‘Timeless’ appended when describing the qualities of the village, and for many years now we have been ‘timeless’ in that the church clock has not been in a working state of repair, and hasn’t been heard since 2004, but now we are temporarily even more timeless, as the clock mechanism and one of the faces has been removed for restoration.

The Village Green will have Children’s Rides, Toys, Games, Cakes, Pub and Bar-B-Q, “The Famous Human Fruit Machine”, Ladies and Gents Excellent Pre-Loved Clothes, Skittles, Tombola, Plants, the Amazing White Elephant Stall and other animals. As well as Tea and Cakes being served in The Chapel. Then 2:00 The May Queen with her King and attendants will progress through the village to be crowned opposite the School, followed by Traditional Maypole Dancing. As Car Parking in the village will be difficult, it is best to approach Hornton from Wroxton down into Bell Street where ample free parking in the signposted Football Pavilion Car Park will be available.

ART EXHIBITION – A Midsummer Fair and Art Exhibition “The Art of Evolution” will be hosted by Sarah Allitt in her garden at Essex House, Horley on Friday 13th May 2016 , open from 9.30am – 3.30pm. There will be a Marquee on the lawn packed with stall holders, a art exhibition and refreshments. The money raised will be given to Breast Cancer Now, a charity close to all our hearts.

MAUNDY THHURSDAY – Maundy Thursday, March 24, is the Benefice Pilgrimage. This will leave Drayton at 1.45 and be in Wroxton at 3. It will reach Balscote at 4.15 and Shennington at 5.30 where walkers will enjoy the Passover meal. At 6pm, there will be a Passover (seder) meal at Shennington Village Hall. Jesus’ last supper will be re-enacted and there will be a short Eucharist in Shennington village hall. Followed by a vigil, starting at 8 at Alkerton.

GOOD FRIDAY – Good Friday, March 25, will be the Stations of the Cross service in Horley Church at 12 noon. This will be followed by the annual frugal lunch in the Old School, generously provided by the ladies guild.

HOLY SATURDAY – Decorating the Church for Easter Day will take place in the morning. There will be a blessing of the fire service at Balscote Church at 8pm on Saturday March 26.

CLEAN 4 THE QUEEN – Last Saturday, March 5, the Horley Parish Council assisted Cherwell DC in organising the annual village litter pick. This year Cherwell tried to make a special effort to mark HM the Queen’s 90th Birthday. Village Volunteers met outside the Old Post Office, picked up their plastic sacks and litter pickers and got to work. Thanks to everyone who took part and made a big impact on the amount of litter in Horley. Well done.

KNITTING FOR VICTORY – This year marks the 70th anniversary of Lord and Lady Bearsted’s return to Upton House to celebrate the end of WWII. We’d like you to help to celebrate our victory year by breaking the Guinness World record for the longest line of knitted bunting. SARAH’S ART EXHIBITION – a message from Sarah Allitt “Some of you may remember the Midsummer Madness Fairs which were held in 1999 and 2000 which were great fun and well supported. This year I thought I would hold another Garden Fair but do things a bit differently. I intend to combine the fair with my second art exhibition entitled “The Art of Evolution”. I am pleased that Susie Taylor, founder of Fino Olive Oil, is helping give the fair a boost. So far we have 11 stallholders with products ranging from Olive oil and vinegars, fabrics and cushions, antique furniture and accessories, to garden and interior products and textiles, contemporary silver jewellery, Bridge in the Box, Silk flowers, and cards. A percentage of the sales will go to Breast Cancer UK. We will also provide a café society atmosphere with specialist coffees and teas, Lily the cupcake van and local products for you to enjoy whilst you are here. I am really looking forward to showing you my latest collection of artwork which will reflect my typical style and will include cityscapes, landscapes, florals, still life and portraits. GUIDES SAY THANKS – 1st Bodicote Guides would like to say “Thank You for making us smile ” after they had walked 5 miles, in the dark when they saw Horley’s duck. Last week on their night hike from Horley Scout camp to Hornton and back to camp before sleeping under canvas on the coldest night of the year so far. Cheers to Judy the duck!

THANKS TO THE PARISH COUNCIL – After many years of erosion and damage we now have a kerb to protect the grass verge on upper Wroxton Lane. The repair and widening of the road should also mean that water will flow into the drains and provide a little more space for passing parked cars. KERBING WORK DELAY – It is regrettable that there will be a delay in completion, but the road will remain open to traffic in the interim. The Parish Council sincerely regrets the inconvenience, but is determined to see the job completed using the materials originally selected. They will keep you updated as to an expected finish date. Unfortunately the County Council’s contractor has ordered the wrong kerbs, and has installed them. The Parish Council had asked for conservation kerbs in a colour known as harvest buff, which is the best match for the existing street scene, but the kerbs which have laid are a much lighter colour. Consequently the contractor has been asked to remove the kerbs laid and replace them with the correct colour at their own cost.

HORLEY RESIDENT’S HIGH SHERIFF AWARD – Mike Patching is to be awarded Oxfordshire’s High Sheriff Award in recognition of his significant and lasting contribution to community life in Horley and with schools in the local area. The High Sheriff of Oxfordshire issues awards each year to people who have made a difference to their community over many years, and whose contribution has not been recognized in some other formal way. The Parish Council put Mike’s name forward for this award for his valuable work over the years. Congratulations Mike, very well deserved.

HORLEY VILLAGE BELLS – To celebrate the first anniversary of the restoration work being completed in Horley, on Saturday Feb 6, Graham Nabb and friends will attempt to ring the first ever full peal on the Horley bells. A peal is when more than 5000 ‘changes’ are rung continuously and takes about 2 hours & 45 minutes. On Horley’s six bells it is only possible to ring 720 different changes, so to achieve the necessary number of changes for a peal, the 720 changes will be rung seven times, each time in a different way. A full peal has never been rung in Horley before, so listen out and/or come and watch the bells being rung by experts on Saturday Feb 6 from about 9.30 onwards. SWEDISH CHOIR –on Sunday December 6, The Youth Choir of the Sofia Church, Jönköping, Sweden come to Horley Parish Church. There was music from the Swedish Lucia tradition with candlelight procession. Local residents were treated to an amazing performance. With thanks to Reverend Dr. Hugh White for organizing the event.

The next service at Horley is the December 20 carol service at 6pm. There is also a midnight mass at 11.30 on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day, the Holy Eucharist is at 11 at Hanwell.

CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE – will be held on Sunday December 20 at 6 in Horley church. Children and young people of Horley will be performing readings, poetry and traditional songs. PARISH COUNCIL MEETING – the Horley Parish council meeting took place last Thursday in the Old School Horley. Matters discussed were: Oxfordshire County council budget savings; it was noted that the weekly subsidized bus service to Banbury will come to an end next year as the county council have decided to withdraw funding. The parish council will look into community lift share schemes. County Council may also withdraw funding for highway verge maintenance which is currently carried out a number of times per year. Kerbing works: the long awaited works will now not begin until February as a road closure is required. Speeding thorough the village: both the parish council and the county council have undertaken traffic and speed monitoring exercises in Hornton Lane. The results of these will be published via Horley Views. It was agreed that the County Council would be asked if further work to improve safety on the bridge on Banbury Lane can be carried out. The broken dog bin post on the corner of Little Lane and Church Lane has been replaced by the parish council. Dog owners are reminded that it is their duty to pick up after their dogs in the village and in the surrounding fields after local residents complained of an increase in dog mess. The date of the next meeting is February 11 2016.

This is expected to happen within the next few days as soon as the white notice disappears then the machine is fully functioning so keep an eye out. This potentially lifesaving device has been procured by the Parish Council from the Community Heartbeat Trust, and has been installed on the front wall of the Red Lion close to the telephone box. It will become available for use in the next few days, as soon as it is registered with the ambulance service. Whilst the AED can be used without any training, the Parish Council has arranged for Community Heartbeat to provide a session which anyone in the village is welcome to attend. This will cover how and when the AED should be used, together with other resuscitation techniques and related issues.

HORNTON & DISTRICT W.I. –The WI met in Hornton chapel last week and were treated to an interesting talk by Rob Totterdel who talked about spice traders. Next month’s meeting will be the Christmas Meal held in the Joiners Arms, Bloxham on December 3 at 7.30. There is a change in the competition. Please bring 6 homemade truffles or similar. HALLOWEEN IN HORLEY – don’t forget its Halloween on Saturday 31. Please be aware that children will be coming around the village. If you are happy for them to call, please leave a pumpkin in the window or outside.

INSET DAY – parents and pupils of the Warriner school don’t forget that Monday November 2 is an inset day. Term three starts on Tuesday November 3.

LADIES GUILD – will meet on Monday November 2 at 7.45 in the old school Horley. Mainly organizing the Christmas market which takes place on Saturday November 28 in the church. All welcome, refreshments will be served.

W.I. – will take place next Thursday, November 5, in the chapel, Hornton at 730. The speaker will be Rob Totterdell on spice traders. The competition is a ginger bread man. There will be a bring and buy stall to raise funds as well as the usual book stall. New members always welcome.

BREAST CANCER COFFEE MORNING – the breast cancer coffee morning, which took place last Saturday, October 24, was a great success, thanks to all the members of the ladies guild for organizing such an enjoyable morning. And thanks to everybody who came along and supported it.

This was a very successful event, many thanks to Amanda for arranging the morning and to the members of the ladies guild for providing the refreshments.

MOBILE LIBRARY – the mobile library is a great service and we are lucky that it comes to Horley. The next time it calls at the telephone box is Wednesday October 28 between 3 and 3.30. Use it or lose it.

BELLS FOR THE BATTLE OF EDGEHILL – the bells will be rung on October 17 for about 40 minutes at the towers directly connected with the battle. Come along and have a listen. Ringers will be split into Cavalier and Roundheads so that there will be a competitive aspect to the ringing throughout the day. At 10am, the ringers will be at Cropredy, at 11, they will have moved on to Radway, 12 there is an official opening, so bring a picnic lunch; 1.00 at Burton Dassett, 2.00 Chadshunt, 3.00 to Kineton, followed by tea and results.

THE FUTURE OF ALKERTON WASTE RECYCLING CENTRE – Current cost saving proposals by OCC include the reduction of the number of household waste centres from 7 to 3 or 4 with one site in central North Oxfordshire. This means the likely closure of Alkerton tip. JUDAISM IN BRITAIN TODAY – on October 12, 2015, Penny Faust from the Oxford Synagogue is coming to outline aspects if the Jewish life. This event will be held in the Church, Hornton at 7.30pm. Do come along as this will be a fascinating insight evening and reflects the history we are all aware of.

HARVEST AUCTION – Last Friday, October 2, in The Red Lion, saw the return of the ever popular Harvest Festival Auction. Grateful thanks to everyone who made or bought thee amazing produce from the event. Also to Dave and Natasha for hosting the event; an amazing £640 was raided, this is to be split between Save the Children – Syria Refuge Crisis and The Banbury Young Homeless Project.

A MID SUMMER NIGHTS DREAM – This took place in the church last weekend and was a resounding success. All the actors performed brilliantly and the audiences were entertained by a very professional performance. Huge thanks must go to Tessa Howell for her brilliant creativity. It was her brainchild to perform this play and she has spent months casting, rehearsing, encouraging and even shouting at the actors to make sure they played their parts perfectly. Thanks also to all the members of the cast, to David Kyle for his musical contribution and to Mike Patching for all his help with the stage, music and lighting. Tessa says this might be her last production but we really hope we can persuade her to do another.

IRONSTONE MUSIC FESTIVAL – A very professional team of musicians led by violinist Lucy Gould and her sister, ‘cellist Kate Gould, has been assembled to play in Horley Church. To add to that line up they have invited Craig Ogden, who is one of the foremost classical guitarists here in the UK! The first concert on Friday 11^th Sept at 7.30 will include music by Schubert & Mendelssohn and Craig will join the string players for the entertaining Guitar Quintet by Boccherini, and a piece entitled Tango Sensations by Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla. Next day Saturday 12th at 12:30 Craig will give a one hour lunchtime recital in which he will play pieces as diverse as Bach to George Harrison and Django Reinhardt. The final concert will be 7.30 pm on Saturday 12^th September and will feature amongst others the marvelous String Quintet by Schubert, probably never played in his lifetime, and not published until 20 years after his early death. When you hear this work, which is one of our “Desert Island” selections, we hope you may marvel at its sheer beauty! THE THREE BELLES AT UPTON HOUSE – This bank holiday weekend, Upton House welcomes the Three Belles to perform in the gardens as part of the Banking for Victory wartime project currently in the house. Join us on Saturday 29 August to get in the party mood, bring a picnic, listen to great music and have a dance as the sun sets on the lawn as you are transported back to that great era of music. CRICK-FIT – will take place tonight, Thursday July 16 at Horley Cricket Club at 6.30. This is a fitness training session run along cricketing lines but open to all girls and ladies, whether they play cricket or not. Feedback from the first two sessions has been very positive, so come along and get fit to music, having fun at the same time.

FRIENDS OF THE WARRINER SCHOOL – will meet Thursday for the last time this academic year. This will be an informal meeting at The Joiners Arms in Bloxham. Come for a light supper at 7 or if you can’t make that the meeting should start at 8. All welcome.

PROGRESSIVE DINNER – took place last Saturday around Horley. 42 guests and 14 hosts took part raising over £800 for the running and upkeep of St.Etheldreda’s Church. Many thanks to all the hosts, guests and organisers for what was a very enjoyable evening.

WOMENS INSTITUTE – just a reminder that W.I. takes place tonight, Thursday (July 2) at 7.30 in the Hornton Methodist Chapel. The speaker is Heather Johnson “Volunteering at a Leprosy Mission in Nepal”. The competition is a single bloom. This month there will be a bring and buy stall. Could members bring things along such as cakes, jams, chutneys, books, unwanted gifts – in fact – anything which can be sold . All money raised from the bring and buy will be given to the Nepal Earthquake Disaster Fund. All welcome, non members also.

WARRINER SCHOOL ART FESTIVAL – tonight at 6pm at the Warriner school Bloxham in the main school hall, there will be a display of the Recycled art competition “totally rubbish” which will include art work by students, sixth formers and parents. Come along and enjoy looking at some wonderful pieces of art work. Refreshments provided by Friends of the Warriner team.

SUMMER ART EXHIBITION – Come and join Janella Horne and Anya Simmons for their Warwickshire Open Studio 2015 Exhibition. It is being held at The National Herb Centre, Banbury Road, Warmington, OX17 1DF. There will be exhibits of distinctive water colour paintings including original pictures, prints and cards with prices to suit all pockets! With everything from cats & kittens, classic cars, gypsy vardos to cottage garden flowers and cheeky hares, there is something for everyone, so please come and take a look! There will also be a few crafts and we will be busy needle-felting fish!

WILD MEDICINE FORAGE – Unfortunately the wild medicine forage which would have been taking place on Thursday 2 and 16 July with Fiona Taylor at Hadsham Farm, has had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Watch this place for more details and any forthcoming walks.

WANT TO LEARN THE ROPES THIS SUMMER? – Fancy having a go at Church bell ringing? Demonstrations and taster sessions are being offered at the Edgehill Ringing Center in St. Peter’s Church, Kineton. These sessions are on Saturday June 27 from 10-12. Tea, coffee and cakes for refreshments. SUMMER FETE SUCCESS – A huge thank you for everything the Horley Ladies Guild did to make the fete a great success once again. From putting up posters, collecting bric-a-brac, donating prizes, wrapping bottles and jars, growing seedlings and setting things up beforehand, to baking cakes, manning the stalls, painting faces and clearing up afterwards, everyone played a part. £1,570 was raised in total, which is almost as much as we raised last year.

WOMENS INSTITUTE – just a reminder that W.I. takes place next Thursday (July 2) at 7.30 in the Hornton Methodist Chapel. The speaker is Heather Johnson “volunteering at a Leprosy Mission in Nepal”. The competition is a single bloom. All members welcome.
