Katharine House Hospice Open Gardens – host needed

The Katherine House Hospice Open Gardens scheme is returning in 2026 and they have asked if Horley could participate. It would need a host to organise the event as Anne Owen isn’t able to do it this time. If you’d like to get involved, here are some more details from Katharine House House:

From carpets of snowdrops and spring blossom to summer borders and rich autumn colour, every season is welcome. Opening your garden helps raise vital funds so we can continue caring for patients and families in our community when they need us most.

Our own gardens here at the hospice which are amazingly maintained by volunteers each week, are very special to all our patients and their loved ones.

What makes Katharine House special – “It’s beautiful gardens. The gardens are stunning; they’re part of the whole experience. And the fact that they are looked after by volunteers is incredible. Mum was a brilliant gardener, so she loved the gardens. They even got the bed outside for her so she could enjoy them more.”

Over the years, Open Gardens has raised tens of thousands of pounds, helping us to provide compassionate care and to maintain the beautiful gardens here at Katharine House, which brings comfort to so many of the people we support.

We hope you will be able to join our calendar of open gardens events this year for visitors to explore and enjoy your garden in Horley which will help make a difference for our patients and their loved ones.

Katharine House Hospice – Host an Open Garden for Katharine House Hospice – form

Our friendly fundraising team is on hand to support you, making it easy and enjoyable to take part.

Help us continue providing specialist palliative care for adults with life-limiting illnesses in our community.

In total, it costs more than £5.9m per year to run every element of Katharine House Hospice. This equates to over £16,000 per day. Fundraising is particularly difficult now, and we are doing everything we can to raise more funds so that we can ensure that our special hospice is here now, tomorrow and in years to come, for you and your loved ones.

London Marathon – update

On Sunday 27th April, after months of training, Chris Marshall successfully completed  the London Marathon. Despite the warm weather, he finished in a very respectable 4 hours and 23 minutes.  He was running in memory of his grandmother Edna Seed who died in July last year. She was beautifully cared for in her last 3 weeks of life in Katharine House Hospice so Chris’s aim was to raise £2000 for this worthwhile charity. To date he has raised just over £3000 so thank you to everyone who donated – it has been really appreciated by Jan and Chris .

If anyone would still like to donate, his just giving page will be open for the next few weeks.

Fundraising for Katharine House Hospice

An earlier post advertised a Gala dinner for KHH on 22nd November. See below for more information, including how you can support the event by offering an Auction Lot or Raffle prize.

Dear Reader

May I take this opportunity to introduce myself and my reason for making contact.

My name is Marilena, and I am a volunteer for Katharine House Hospice where I offer my time to cover as a Ward Receptionist and help with fundraising.

Katharine House Hospice is your local hospice – providing specialist palliative care for adults with an incurable illness across north Oxfordshire and south Northamptonshire.

Hospice care at Katharine House is for anyone over the age of 18 years who has an advanced life-limiting illness. The care is delivered by a multi-professional team who have specialised in this field and take a holistic approach, considering physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. We support people from the point of diagnosis onwards – and will be there for patients for as long as they need, whether that is days, weeks, months or even years.

Katharine House Hospice also recognise the importance of those close to their patients. Family and friends are affected too, and they may have lots of concerns and questions that the Hospice will answer and offer support.

All the hospice’s services are FREE to the patient and their families. In order to help ensure that this care can keep on going for many years to come we need to continually support them with raising funds for the Hospice.

I am therefore delighted to confirm that I have a confirmed date of 22nd November 2025 for a fundraising Black Tie Gala Dinner and Dance being held at the Cotswold Hotel and Spa, Chipping Norton.

The evening will offer ‘Bubbly’ on arrival followed by a 3 course sit down dinner with music and dancing through the night.  We will be holding an Auction and Raffle with one or two other fundraising items taking place during the evening, so an opportunity for everyone attending to be involved in helping raise funds for the Hospice.

Would you be interested in taking a table for the Evening ?  We have tables of 8’s and 10’s available and the ticket price is £75.00 per person.  If you are unable to pull a table together then individual tickets are available also.  Tickets are going well so we have a limited number remaining, so if you do wish to join us, then please let me know as soon as possible so we can hold a table for you.

Another way of supporting the event could be by offering an Auction Lot or raffle prize.  Would this be something you could help us with? Whatever you are able to offer would be gratefully received.

I thank you for taking the time to read my email and hope to hear back from you with some positive news and can be contacted on Whatsapp on 07891 178920 or by email mjkearns@hotmail.co.uk

With best wishes

Marilena
