Children’s Halloween Trail – Saturday 31st October

Halloween

“On Saturday 31st October children who live in Horley (and their parents) are invited to take part in a Halloween Trail around the village. To ensure it is a covid- safe activity children will be following a map (see below), and keeping to groups of 6 or less, to find different spooky items (and of course sweets!) located around the village. All sweets will be individually wrapped and each station will have one treat per child. We won’t be knocking on any doors and unfortunately we can’t accept any treats put out in front of houses. We would love villagers to join in by putting out their carved pumpkins to light our path by 5pm on Saturday 31st. Maps and glow sticks for children will be available from underneath the village notice board.”

If you would like us to email you a copy of the map or if you have any other questions please contact Sarah at sarahtaylor0403@gmail.com

Thanks and Happy Halloween!

It’s Pete’s Birthday, let’s celebrate!

Many of you may know Pete Miers, our resident furniture maker.

Pete will be celebrating his 90th birthday on Saturday, 24th October.

To mark this special occasion it has been suggested that we buy a young Oak Tree to plant in the village (unless anyone has another idea) as a reminder of all the work Pete has done for many of us over the years, and hopefully will continue to do.

If you would like to contribute towards a gift, please contact Sue Patching.

Recycle your old gadgets and postage stamps for BARKS

Hornton have launched an appeal for everyone to collect used postage stamps and unwanted collectibles in the run-up to Christmas.   We can take part too!  Here are the details…

Step on the GAS for BARKS – Recycle your old gadgets and postage stamps this Christmas

Banburyshire’s leading animal rescue charity has launched a new appeal in the countdown to Christmas – a call for donations of unwanted phones, small gadgets, coins, jewellery and postage stamps to raise vital funds for animal care and re-homing.

The new campaign is called GAS – which stands for Gadgets And Stamps – and is the latest fundraiser for Banbury Animal Rescue and Kindness Service (BARKS). It has been timed to coincide with local households getting rid of old or obsolete items in anticipation of getting new ones for Christmas.

This is the ideal way to feel good about recycling and help needy animals at the same time. You can save up your Christmas stamps and your old or broken small gadgets, like phones, cameras and gaming devices – and not just chuck them out but use them to help give new lives to innocent animals.

We DO accept:

  • Stamps from envelopes (with a small margin of paper around them)
  • Jewellery
  • Unwanted currency/coins/notes
  • Mobile Phones
  • Cameras
  • Video Cameras
  • Electronic Gaming Devices (consoles, accessories and games)
  • Ipods/MP3 Players
  • Sat Navs
  • Tablet Computers

These can be broken or working!

Sadly, we DO NOT accept:

  • Home Telephones
  • Home Computers and Accessories
  • Fax Machines
  • DVD Players
  • Set Top Boxes (Sky/Freeview etc.)
  • Printers
  • Kitchen Appliances
  • Personal Grooming Items”

Please contact Chris Woodcock on 670795 to arrange to drop items off or for them to be collected.

ARTISAN APPLE JUICE made from your own fruit!

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we can’t have a village apple pressing event this October, but if you have a glut of apples and want to do something yourself, here is an excellent  suggestion from Brian and Sue Ashdown:

“Pasture Farm is a family-run farm in Longwick, near the Bucks / Oxfordshire border. They make pure, pressed apple juice from their own orchard and also offer a complete juicing service – They press, pasteurise & bottle your apples & pears to produce your own delicious juice.

In September 2019 we had a glut of apples from one particular tree in the garden.  As we do not like seeing things go to waste, we decided upon having the apples pressed pasteurised and bottled, as we would make more use of the juice instead of a freezer full of cooked apple. The juice was incredible.  This year our pressing will be made from a mixture of fruit. We will wait and see how it turns out.

If anyone has surplus apples in the village, we would recommend the Belgrove Family’s service.”

Village Litter Pick will be this Saturday…

The annual village litter pick will take place at 10.00 on the morning of Saturday 26th September.

If you can spare some time to help out please could you gather in front of the Old Post Office on the corner of Banbury Lane at 10.00 on 26th September. Litter pickers, protective gloves and rubbish and recycling bags will be provided by CDC.  If people have their own gloves, that would be great, as people are urged to protect themselves against any risk of infection, and take care to wash their hands thoroughly after the litter pick has been completed.

Let’s keep Horley looking fabulous!
